Does Booking.com remind you before free cancellation ends? What Booking.com, Expedia and Agoda tell you
You booked a hotel with free cancellation months ago. Somewhere in the confirmation email there's a date after which cancelling costs money. The natural question is whether the booking site will warn you before that date arrives. For Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com and Agoda, we couldn't find a single help page that promises a reminder before the free-cancellation deadline. What they document is where the deadline is written down. The warning is your job.
This guide covers what each site actually tells you, where to find your deadline on each, why it's easy to miss, and four ways to get a reminder that doesn't depend on your memory.
The short answer
We searched the official help pages and policies of the big booking sites for any mention of a "your free cancellation ends soon" reminder and found none. That is not proof that no email or app notification ever goes out, because sites change what they send and may test things on some accounts. But none of them lists a reminder as a feature you can count on. Treat the deadline as something you must track yourself.
What the sites do document is the cancellation policy and how to use it:
- Booking.com says each room or property has its own policy, and that a free cancellation policy lets you cancel free "as long as you do it within the time frame specified by the property", for example "Cancel before mm/dd/yy hh:mm". That wording appears in the conditions during booking and in the confirmation (Booking.com FAQ).
- Expedia and Hotels.com point you to your account: sign in, open your itinerary, review the cancellation policy that applies, and cancel from there. If the cancel option isn't shown, the booking may be too close to check-in or non-refundable (Expedia).
- Agoda says your confirmation email specifies the last date for free cancellation, and that a cancellation received after that date is subject to a fee of at least one night unless the email says otherwise (Agoda policies).
Where to find your deadline on each site
Booking.com
Start with the confirmation email, which carries the cancellation policy. Booking.com's help pages also point to the confirmation page under "Bookings" in your account (Booking.com help). After you cancel, you should get a cancellation confirmation email. If you don't see one within 24 hours, Booking.com tells you to contact the property to confirm it received the cancellation (Booking.com FAQ).
Expedia and Hotels.com
Sign in, open your trips, choose the hotel itinerary and look at the cancellation details. Without an account, Expedia says you can use the itinerary or confirmation number from your booking email. Expedia's developer documentation describes the free-cancellation window as ending where the earliest penalty window begins, so the itinerary shows the real cutoff, not the date you remember from the search results (Expedia Group developer docs).
Agoda
Agoda's confirmation email specifies the cancellation date. A 2018 reader story on The Points Guy adds a useful detail: Agoda shows the deadline down to the minute during booking and its booking conditions include the UTC offset that applies, but the traveler in the story still missed it, and learned that the hotel's time zone was the one that counted (The Points Guy).
Whichever site you used, copy the exact deadline, including the time and the time zone, into your own notes the day you book. Don't rely on being able to find the email later.
Why the deadline is so easy to miss
Three things work against you:
- Long gaps. You book three months ahead. The deadline might be 24 to 48 hours before check-in, and Booking.com notes that some properties allow cancellation up to the day of arrival (Booking.com). That is a long time to remember a date nobody reminded you about.
- Time zones. Booking.com says the deadline "is usually calculated in the hotel's local time zone, not your own". The Points Guy story is a real example: the traveler tried to cancel on April 22 at home, but it was already April 23 in Vietnam, and the booking had become non-refundable. We go deeper in our guide to free cancellation deadlines.
- Many bookings. On a multi-city trip every hotel has its own deadline, and the first one to expire is not always the first hotel you'll visit.
Four ways to get a reminder
1. A calendar event (free, manual)
- Open the confirmation and find the exact deadline, with its time zone.
- Convert it to your own time zone. A calendar app will do the conversion if you set the event's time zone to the hotel's city.
- Create an event named after the hotel plus "free cancellation ends", with the booking link and confirmation number in the notes.
- Add one alert two days before and another a few hours before.
This costs nothing and works, but you have to do it for every booking, including the ones you make from your phone at midnight.
2. A script that reads your Booking.com emails (free, technical)
A developer published an open-source Google Apps Script that scans your Gmail for Booking.com confirmations and creates calendar events 48 hours before each booking has to be cancelled. Its author says it assumes you use Gmail and Google Calendar, tells you not to rely on it alone, and warns that it will break if Booking.com changes its email template (GitHub: bookingNotifications). It's a good example of the idea, but it only covers one booking site and needs you to be comfortable pasting code into Google's script editor.
3. A price-watch service with deadline reminders
Some price-watch tools also remind you about deadlines. For example, Underbook's help page says that when you set a watch from a booking confirmation page, you also get two reminders before your free cancellation ends (Underbook help). It works through a browser extension and from the confirmation page of the booking site. Check what each tool reads and where it sends data before you use it.
4. A trip tool that reads your confirmations
The weak point of every manual method is copying the deadline out of the email. Jetzo removes that step. You connect Gmail with read-only access, and it finds booking confirmations (including ones from Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com and Agoda), pulls out the hotel, dates, price and the free-cancellation deadline, and groups it all into trips. About 48 hours before a free-cancellation window closes you get a push notification and an email. Jetzo also checks the price of your refundable hotels every night, on the booking site you used and on the hotel's own site, and matches room types so it compares like with like. It never books or cancels anything for you.
Jetzo works with Gmail only for now. Your first trip is free; after that it's $2.99 a month or $9.99 a year. If you'd rather not connect an email account, options 1 to 3 are perfectly valid.
What a good reminder looks like
Whichever method you choose, check that it does these things:
- Uses the deadline in the hotel's time zone. A reminder set for "midnight" in your own time zone can already be late.
- Fires early enough to act. Two days gives you time to rebook elsewhere, compare prices, or ask the hotel a question. A reminder a few hours ahead is only a last warning.
- Includes the manage link and confirmation number. Cancelling should take one tap, not a search through your inbox.
- Covers every booking. A system that handles nine of your ten hotels is the one that fails on the tenth.
- Gets updated after changes. If you change dates or room type, the deadline can change too. Re-read the policy after any modification.
FAQ
Does Booking.com send a reminder before free cancellation ends?
We found no Booking.com help page that promises one. Its documentation says the cancellation policy is in your confirmation email and in the booking details in your account, so plan to track the date yourself.
Does Expedia remind you before your free cancellation deadline?
We found no Expedia or Hotels.com help page describing a reminder of that kind. Their documentation tells you to check the cancellation policy in your itinerary and cancel from there.
What time zone is a hotel cancellation deadline in?
Usually the hotel's local time zone, not yours, according to Booking.com. Agoda shows the UTC offset in its booking conditions, so check the offset when you book.
Can I cancel on the last day of the free cancellation period?
Yes, if you do it before the exact time stated in your policy. Don't leave it to the last hour, because the deadline may already have passed in the hotel's time zone while it's still the previous day for you.
Is there an app that reminds me about hotel cancellation deadlines?
Yes. Calendar events work for free, and a few tools such as Underbook and Jetzo send reminders. Jetzo reads your Gmail booking confirmations and alerts you about 48 hours before each free-cancellation window closes.
Help pages and policies mentioned here were checked in October 2026. Sites change what they send, so check your own account and confirmation email for the final word.
