Hotel price drop after booking: what Booking.com, Expedia and Agoda will actually refund in 2026

By the Jetzo team · · 6 min read

You booked a hotel through Booking.com, Expedia or Agoda, and now the same room is cheaper. Will the site give you the difference? In 2026 the honest answer depends on two things: where the cheaper price is, and which site you used. Expedia and Hotels.com ended their price guarantee this year. Booking.com and Agoda still have one, but each only pays out in narrow cases.

This guide compares what the three sites actually promise, what each pays back and when, and what to do in the most common situation, where the drop is on the same site you booked with.

Two different situations

"The price dropped" can mean two very different things, and the guarantees only cover one of them:

  • You find the same stay cheaper on another website. This is what price-match guarantees are written for.
  • The site you booked with now charges less than you paid. No guarantee we reviewed covers this. Agoda's rules say its Best Price Guarantee doesn't apply when the lower price was found on Agoda itself, and Booking.com's wording speaks only of a lower price "on another website". The tool for this case is cancel-and-rebook, which needs a free-cancellation rate.

Keep these two apart as you read the rest.

Booking.com

Booking.com's customer terms say that if, after you book, you find the same accommodation with the same conditions for less on another website, it will refund the difference. The matching rules are strict: same property and room type, same dates, same cancellation policy, same occupancy and meal plan, a price in the property's local currency, and the other offer must be online and bookable when Booking.com checks. Prices that need a login, coupon or loyalty status, and offers from sites that hide the hotel until you pay, are excluded (Booking.com terms). We walk through the filing steps in our guide to getting the difference back.

How long you have to file is reported differently. One 2026 guide says claims are accepted up to 24 hours before arrival, while another says any time before check-in (HotelRefund, Plot). Since the sources disagree, file as soon as you spot the lower price and check the current terms on your own booking.

Agoda

Agoda's Best Price Guarantee covers a confirmed booking when you can book the same accommodation, for the same dates and conditions, at a lower rate on a listed competitor. The versions of the policy we found list sites such as Booking.com, Expedia, Hotels.com, Trip.com, Priceline and Airbnb, and say Agoda will, at its sole discretion, either match the rate or credit the difference in AgodaCash (Agoda policies; the guarantee is also referenced in clause 17 of its terms of use). Agoda's published conditions include:

  • the same property, check-in and check-out dates, room and bed type
  • the same or more flexible cancellation and amendment policies
  • the same or higher occupancy and the same or better benefits, such as breakfast
  • the same currency, with the final rate including taxes and service fees
  • a room that can be confirmed instantly at the time Agoda checks

It requires your Agoda booking ID, the web address of the cheaper offer, and up to three screenshots showing the room, rate and availability. A valid claim must be submitted before 11:59 PM, property local time, the day before check-in. Flights, activities and hotel-plus-flight bundles aren't eligible, and neither are private, packaged or member-only rates (HotelRefund summary of Agoda's terms).

Two details matter. First, AgodaCash is credit in your Agoda account, useful only if you book with Agoda again. Second, clause 17 of Agoda's terms also says it may, at its discretion and without obligation, rebook the same room type at a cheaper price if it finds one and reimburse the savings in AgodaCash. Don't rely on that happening.

Expedia and Hotels.com

Expedia's claim page states that its Hotel Price Guarantee "will end on July 28, 2026 as part of updates to One Key" (Expedia). Coverage of the One Key changes reports that Hotels.com ended its guarantee too (Upgraded Points). Bookings made before the cutoff can still be eligible under the old terms. For anything booked afterwards, the main protection left is cancel-and-rebook on a refundable rate.

This is a useful lesson in how much to trust any guarantee. It's a policy the company can change, and Expedia's ended inside a broader rewards overhaul. A refundable rate gives you leverage that doesn't depend on a program staying alive.

When the drop is on the same site: cancel and rebook

If your booking still has free cancellation and the same room is now cheaper on the same site, rebook it yourself:

  1. Compare like with like. Same room type, bed type, guests and meal plan, and ideally the same cancellation terms. A cheaper non-refundable rate is a different product from your flexible one.
  2. Compare the total. Taxes and resort fees can show up only at checkout.
  3. Book the new reservation first. Prices can bounce back within hours.
  4. Cancel the old one before its deadline, and keep the cancellation confirmation. The deadline is usually in the hotel's local time zone (Booking.com), so convert it.
  5. Check the refund arrives if you prepaid.

Before you swap, check whether the new booking is eligible for anything the old one earned, such as loyalty benefits or a member rate. Rebooking can change those, so read the new booking's terms.

If your booking is non-refundable

Cancel-and-rebook is off the table, because cancelling loses the money. A price-match claim only works if the cheaper offer is on another site and matches your conditions. On Agoda, a more flexible cheaper rate elsewhere can count; on Booking.com the conditions must be the same. If the cheaper price is on the same site, your remaining option is to ask the hotel or the site's customer service, with no program obliged to say yes. Our guide to free cancellation explains why a refundable rate is worth a small premium.

The real problem is noticing the drop

No site watches prices for you. A guarantee only pays out if you re-check the exact same room, on the right site, and file before a deadline. Most people stop checking after a day or two.

Jetzo does that part. You connect Gmail with read-only access, it finds your booking confirmations and the free-cancellation deadline, and then every night it checks the current price for the same stay on the booking site you used and on the hotel's own site, matching the room type. If the same stay is meaningfully cheaper while you can still cancel for free, you get an alert. It never books or cancels for you, so the rebooking decision stays yours. Your first trip is free, then $2.99 a month or $9.99 a year, and Gmail is the only supported email for now.

FAQ

Does Expedia refund the difference if the hotel price drops?

Not for new bookings. Expedia ended its Hotel Price Guarantee on July 28, 2026. If your rate is refundable, you can rebook at the lower price and cancel the original.

Does Booking.com refund the difference when a price drops after booking?

Only when the cheaper price is for the same stay and conditions on another website. A drop on Booking.com itself isn't covered by its price match, so rebook if your booking has free cancellation.

Does Agoda price match after booking?

Yes, through its Best Price Guarantee. You file a claim before 11:59 PM property time the day before check-in, and Agoda may match the rate or credit the difference as AgodaCash.

Is it worth cancelling and rebooking a hotel for a small saving?

Only if the saving is real after taxes and fees and nothing else changes. Check the room, the cancellation terms and any loyalty benefits first, and book the new one before cancelling the old.

How do I know when my hotel price has dropped?

You have to check, or use a tool. Jetzo checks your refundable hotels nightly and alerts you when the same stay gets meaningfully cheaper.

Policies were checked on the cited pages in October 2026 and change often. Check the current terms on your own booking before you rely on a guarantee.
