Car rental free cancellation and price drops: how to rebook for less without paying a fee

By the Jetzo team · · 6 min read

Car rentals are one of the few travel bookings where waiting can pay off. Rates change often, and most major companies let you book without paying up front. That means you can reserve early, keep looking, and switch to a cheaper rate if one appears. The catch is that this only works if your booking is actually cancellable for free, and "pay now" rates often aren't.

This guide explains how free cancellation works for car rentals, what Enterprise, Avis and Hertz publish about their fees, how to rebook when the price drops, and how to avoid the no-show fee that catches people out.

Pay later vs pay now: where free cancellation comes from

The single biggest factor is whether you prepaid. The three big US brands all describe the same split:

  • Enterprise says that if you did not prepay, there is no cancellation fee (Enterprise reservations FAQ).
  • Avis lists "Pay at Counter" reservations as having no cancellation fee (Avis reservations FAQ).
  • Hertz's US and Canada Pay Later terms say that cancelling before the scheduled pickup has no fee, but warn that some bookings show a no-show fee at booking time, according to a third-party summary of Hertz's terms. Check the exact terms on your own confirmation.

A prepaid ("pay now") rate is usually advertised as cheaper, but you give up the flexibility. If a better price shows up later, you may pay a fee to switch.

What the big brands charge to cancel a prepaid booking

These are the US figures the companies publish. They can change, differ by country and by booking channel, and your confirmation is the final word.

Company (US site)Cancel more than 24 hours before pickupCancel within 24 hours of pickupNot picked up
EnterpriseRefund minus $50Refund minus $100Refund minus a $100 no-show fee
AvisRefund minus $50Refund minus $150No refund of the prepaid amount
Hertz (Pay Now)$100 fee$200 feePrepaid amount forfeited

Sources: Enterprise, Avis and Hertz. Enterprise's European site follows different rules: it says a prepaid booking can be cancelled without a fee 7 days ahead, and that cancelling within 24 hours of pickup is not entitled to a refund.

Prepaying only makes sense if the saving clearly beats the fee you might pay later. For a rental you may need to change, a pay-later rate is the safer choice.

Watch out for no-show and "card hold" fees

"No fee to cancel" and "no fee if you don't show up" are not the same promise. Avis, for example, lists two non-prepaid booking types, "No Show Fee" and "Credit Card Hold", with a $75 fee if the reservation was not cancelled at least 24 hours before the scheduled pickup. It says these apply to certain bookings, such as some promotions and some specialty categories booked by phone in peak periods (Avis reservations FAQ).

The fee amount and the 24-hour cut-off are shown at the time of booking, so read the line on your confirmation. If you will not collect the car, cancel before the pickup time instead of simply not turning up.

How to get a lower price after you book

Rental rates can change several times a day, according to AutoSlash, so a price you booked last week may be higher than today's. The process is the same as for hotels (see how to get the difference back when a hotel price drops), with one extra rule: always secure the new booking before you cancel the old one.

  1. Book a pay-later rate early. It locks in a car and costs nothing to cancel.
  2. Check back, or use a tracker. You can search again yourself. Free tools such as AutoSlash will watch an existing reservation, including one booked on another site, and email you if they find a lower rate (AutoSlash tracker). You rebook and cancel the old reservation yourself.
  3. Read the new rate's terms. A cheaper result may be prepaid or non-cancellable. A guide to the AutoSlash process notes that some options listed may not allow free cancellation (Top Travel on Points).
  4. Book the cheaper one first. Cancel the original only once the new confirmation is in your inbox.
  5. Cancel the old booking and keep track of the new one. Make sure you get a cancellation confirmation. If you used a tracker, update or stop it so it follows the booking you are actually keeping.

If your rate has changed because you modified the dates or location, note that Enterprise says changing the rental can change your daily rate, taxes and surcharges, so compare the new quote before confirming.

If you booked through a travel site

The site that owns the booking handles the cancellation. Enterprise says that reservations booked on a third-party website must be cancelled on that website, and Avis says a travel agency or online booking agent "owns" the reservation, so its policies apply. Cancelling with the rental company's own site or counter will not fix it.

The same rule applies to hotels, and it is a common reason people miss a deadline. If you already have, see what you can still do after missing the free cancellation deadline.

A simple checklist for every car rental

  • Note whether it is pay later or prepaid, and the fee for each cancellation window.
  • Save the pickup date and time in the pickup location's local time, and the cancel-by time if there is one.
  • Keep the confirmation number and the link to manage the booking in one place.
  • Recheck the price a few times before you travel, especially a week or so out.
  • Add the flight number to the reservation if the company asks for it. Avis, for instance, says it will not charge its non-cancellation fee after a flight cancellation if the airline and flight number were on the reservation before pickup.

For the equivalent system for hotels, read what free cancellation really means and how to never miss the deadline.

Keeping car rentals in the same place as the rest of your trip

Car rental confirmations are easy to lose in an inbox, especially when they arrive alongside flights and hotels. Jetzo reads your booking confirmations in Gmail (read-only) and puts flights, hotels and car rentals into one trip, with the manage-booking link next to each. When a confirmation states a free-cancellation deadline, it sends a push notification and an email about 48 hours before the window closes. Jetzo's nightly price check currently covers hotels, not car rentals, so for a car you still need to recheck the rate yourself or use a tracker. It never cancels or books anything for you. Your first trip is free, then $2.99 a month or $9.99 a year, and Gmail is the only supported email for now.

FAQ

Can I cancel a car rental for free?

Usually, if you did not prepay. Enterprise says there is no cancellation fee on a reservation that was not prepaid, and Avis says the same for Pay at Counter bookings. Prepaid rates normally carry a fee, and some pay-later bookings carry a no-show fee, so check your confirmation.

How much is the fee to cancel a prepaid car rental?

It depends on the company and the timing. In the US, the published figures are $50 or $100 at Enterprise, $50 or $150 at Avis, and $100 or $200 at Hertz, depending on whether you cancel more than or within 24 hours of pickup. The figures differ in other countries.

What happens if I don't show up for a car rental?

For a prepaid booking you can lose some or all of the money: Enterprise lists a $100 no-show fee, and Avis says a prepaid reservation that isn't cancelled or collected receives no refund. Some pay-later bookings also have a no-show fee shown at booking, so cancel before pickup if your plans change.

Can I rebook my rental car if the price drops?

Yes, if your current booking is cancellable without a fee. Make the new reservation first, check its cancellation terms, and then cancel the original. A free tracker such as AutoSlash can watch an existing reservation and email you if it finds a lower rate.

Does Jetzo track car rental price drops?

Not yet. Jetzo's nightly price check covers hotel bookings. It does add car rentals to your trip and can remind you before a free-cancellation window ends when the confirmation states one.

Policies and fees were checked on the cited pages in November 2026. Rental companies change their terms and vary them by country and location, so your own confirmation is the final word.
